Plot Summary: A novel in verse, this is a coming-of-age story from the point of view of Sophie, a ninth grade girl. Sophie’s on the lookout for true love before she even understands what it is. She dates multiple boys throughout the course of the book, before realizing that the best one for her is the last person she’d ever expect. The one poem in this book which is most frequently objected to is entitled ‘Ice Capades,’ and it describes Sophie’s fascination with how her breasts react to the cold.
Evaluation: This book contains many important lessons about teenage relationships, one of the more chilling being when Sophie learns her online boyfriend is a pervert before she makes plans to meet with him in person. I’d imagine that most adults might be initially wary of the title of this novel, but it refers to nothing more than an incident in which Sophie secretly changes out of a dress her mother wants her to wear to a school dance and into one which she feels will be more socially acceptable. All in all, this is a heartwarming story about a teenage girl learning how to be true to herself. Fans of this book should check out its companion title, What My Girlfriend Doesn’t Know.
Annotation: Sophie is looking for her true love, but she is going to keep dating boys who aren’t right for her until she really learns to listen to her heart.
