Plot Summary: Witches are real, and they’re the most dangerous creatures on earth. More than anything else, witches despise children. Grandmamma knows everything about witches, and she tells her grandson all that she knows about them. But even though he is prepared, when he comes face-to-face with the Grand High Witch he can’t stop her from turning him into a mouse. However, with a little help from his grandmother, maybe he can stop them from doing the same thing to every child in England.

Evaluation: This book represents Roald Dahl at his very best. The young boy is eventually able to defeat the witches with the help of his grandmother for a very satisfactory ending, even though he himself is never returned to human form. Critics of Dahl’s work call him a misogynist, citing in this particular book the fact that all of the witches are female. However, it must be noted that the boy’s grandmother is one of the strongest and most positive adult role models in any of Dahl’s books. Children will be enthralled by this delightfully creepy page turner.

Annotation: When a young boy accidentally stumbles onto a real, live witch convention and is turned into a mouse, will he be able to stop the witches from imposing the same fate on every other child in England?
